For the first time, Sant Joan de Labritja (also referred to in Spanish as San Juan) in the north of Ibiza will be hosting its own trail race, on Sunday the 16th of September.
This beautiful and rugged region has a wealth of cracking hiking trails, which I happily discovered several years ago when visiting Ibiza on holiday. Since then these challenging routes have become some of my favourite running trails, including part of our 4 Marathons in 4 Days Challenge 3 years ago.
The race, named the "Ruta Norte CxM", will be 20km with a very tasty 800m elevation gain.
Starting and finishing in the beautiful village of Sant Joan de Labritja, the course follows a loop, first north to the small coastal town of Portinatx, then along the coastline and back up into the hills. It promises some wonderful and technical single track with sensational views. Most of the climbing takes place in the second half of the race - so keep something in reserve!
The organisers have also planned a shorter race over 5km (+150m elevation) together with a hike.
